Shane Doan is Number One

Shane Doan will become the first player to be suspended for receiving an instigator penalty within the last five minutes of regulation time.  Doan did that tonight by cracking Vitaly Vishnevski at the end of the Coyotes 2-1 loss to the Ducks.

Doan and coach Wayne Gretzky will also be fined due to Doan’s actions.

This is a new rule this season for the “new” NHL.  I wrote about it over the summer.

Many games Doan might have just been given a roughing, or double roughing along with a misconduct or game misconduct, but the game had some nasty moments and the officiating crew probably wasn’t in any mood for extracurricular activities after the whistle.  There’s a recap over at hockeyfights.com and the video will be up for a day or so.
