York Awarded What?
An arbitrator has awarded Islanders forward Mike York $2.85 million for the 2006-07 season.
New general manager Garth Snow has his first tough decision to make for the New York Islanders, and he has to make it fast.
This is a tough decision?
Snow was on Leafs Lunch the other day and already used the phrase “right to walk away”. If this was in his mind already, I’ll take a guess he wasn’t thinking about Arron Asham, although if this is how arbitration awards are going to go, perhaps Snow will have two more roster spots to fill.
In other news, I contacted an arbitrator and asked him to valuate this website. $235.4 million dollars was his ruling. Hopefully I’ll find a taker and get me my own NHL team.
Update 1000pm: On newyorkislanders.com Garth Snow has issued this statement:
“We respect the arbitrator’s decision and appreciate the process that led to the one-year award for Mike, a player we think the world of. It was our intention prior to the hearing to sign him to a long-term deal, and it remains our hope to have Mike York in an Islanders uniform for years to come.”
An acceptance? Your guess is as good as mine for the moment.
Update Jul 24 1115am: From the “oh no you didn’t!” department:
Why, Slap Shots has learned, it was none other than former GM Mike Milbury, who supposedly has been severed from the hockey department, but who nevertheless was dispatched by Wang on Wednesday to first attempt to negotiate a deal with York to avoid arbitration, and then to represent the team at the hearing the following day. York was awared an $800,000 raise yesterday through arbitration.
Larry Brooks has a few more comments about the Islanders organization that will probably just make you nod your head at this point.
Update Jul 24 900pm: Non-confirmation confirmation that the Islanders accepted the arbitration ruling from the NHLPA’s Mike York page. Also, the Islanders avoided arbitration with Arron Asham.
Update Jul 25 535pm: From TSN: Islanders accept award decision on York
