The On-Ice Mic

I just want to thank all stations employing the on-ice microphone.

Without it, I wouldn’t be able to hear a player shouting “c’mon boys!” 10 times in a row.

Let’s face it - this thing has been virtually useless all season long.  Few players deserve to be mic’d up and so far the networks simply aren’t choosing them enough.

I don’t care how many times Jeremy Roenick’s been mic’d - do it again, or go hit up Sean Avery.  Give me Ian Laperriere for a quick one-liner.  Earlier in the season I got a kick out of Arron Asham yapping at Brian McGrattan, the basic, but effective “what’s 2 plus 2 McGrattan?”

However, outside of a handful of players, it’s just a waste of network time and isn’t providing the fans with any sort of inside access or entertainment.

So please, NHL broadcasting network: don’t mic a player because of his stats line, mic him because of his personality or because you know he’ll actually say something worthwhile; and if he doesn’t, please don’t bother airing it.
