Red Wings Player Collapses
A Red Wings player has collapsed after a shift. The game has been halted and emergency personel are being brought in. Updates to come.
Update 813pm: the player is Jiri Fischer. Speculation is he might have taken a puck to the throat.
Update 815pm: they’re going to end the first period early and add the extra time onto the next period. Fischer hasn’t gone to the hospital yet, hopefully that’s a good sign, as is the game continuing.
Update 820pm: Fischer is said to be breathing on his own. Very good sign (I hope).
Update 830pm: Fischer was taken to a hospital, breathing on his own, but unconscious. A replay shows that it might have been a stick, not a puck, to the throat that caused the collapse.
Update 837pm: They are waiting for another ambulance to arrive before starting the game again (there’s always an ambulance ready at games in case of emergency).
Update 847pm: Red Wings spokesman John Hahn has said that Jiri Fischer suffered a seizure and was given CPR on the bench, possibly meaning there was no stick or puck to the throat, but he reported Fischer is stable at the hospital, and that’s the good word.
Update 850pm: The crowd is given an update that Fischer is stable, to which they applaud.
Update 900pm: The game has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled within the next few days.
FSN Detroit did a good job covering the situation and giving updates whenever they could.
