Ninth Time’s a Charm

The Islanders beat the Penguins tonight in a game that went into a nine-round shootout.  Without looking anything up I’ll take a guess and say that’s the longest shootout of the season.

Jason Blake had the winning goal for the Islanders.  Blake, third on the team in goals and fourth in points, somehow took the ninth shot for the Islanders, behind Arron Asham.

Update Nov 15 1125am: From today’s Newsday:

Bates offered some insight to Stirling with each choice. Stirling said Oleg Kvasha was next if Blake failed. Then he might start going through a few defensemen.

DiPietro overheard this and chimed in. Said the goalie, “I was next.”
