More NY Hockey Talk
I generally don’t load up on the home team(s) like this, but it’s just been a week or so where I’ve noticed a gap in local coverage. Alan Hahn from Newsday is always on the ball, but sometimes it seems like he’s it. His piece today outlines how the new contracts out there are fat so far, and that just doesn’t fit into the Islanders plans. The quickie summary: they’re looking for a defenseman, a bunch have signed, some are still left.
Here’s a random thought: the cap went up by $5 million US this season. It seems like many teams are throwing all of it at one player. Are we going to see the same amount of back and forth movement with the AHL clubs this upcoming year (the kind of trips where players move up and down simply for cap space) because teams couldn’t manage to save a couple of hundred grand under the cap?
Something I haven’t mentioned yet: the possible Islanders-Rangers game at Yankee Stadium.
I think if they could figure out a way to make sure the field isn’t damaged this could really fly and be a huge success, tv ratings and all (at least locally).
A request if it happens: please, please, please have Bob Sheppard announce the starting lineups. I was hoping I wasn’t the only one thinking about that and luckily I’m not. Hearing “The Voice of God” would be quite a way to start a hockey game.
