Introducing Feedreader

I finally have my feedreader going.  It’s accessible at the top.  There’s no base link yet (will add a little later on, explaining each section), but the submenu is active.

Think of it as a live blogroll.  Instead of links on the side of my blog, I’ve got links on those pages as well as the latest blurbs of posts.

I’ve limited it to the last 50 posts/articles in each section.  Outside of the minors & college section, that generally means it goes back no more than 24 hours.  It’s not publicly archived.

This is using RSS/Atom to grab the posts.  Even if you have a full feed, I’m truncating everything.  This is to push people towards your site and content.  I’ve sent out messages to many that I was going to have this and one or two asked if I could display their full content with a direct comments link, so I am working in a way to do that.  Blogs are checked every 30 minutes.

If you don’t want your blog here - no problem, I’ll remove it immediately.  Just shoot me a note.

Some kinks to still work out:
- Making sure times are right.  Unfortunately everyone doesn’t use proper date/time on their feeds, and I’m trying to adjust best I can for that.
- The names on the blogroll are what you provide on your feed.  There’s little problem with this, but Jes only has an image link, so I’m trying to work on an override.  Just thought I’d let you all know why he’s “h”.
- Better truncating, so I don’t cut off mid-word.
- Some are now having no titles for their blog posts.  What’s up with that Mirtle?  In those cases I’ll try and just use the first few words of the post.  Until then, the “new window” button still shows properly, so it’s still linked.  I’ll also add a “more” link after each blub to the post.

Besides blogs, you’ll notice the three other sections:
Local News - NHL local newspapers that have feeds for their hockey section.
Minors and College News - Minor league city newspapers, college city newspapers along with tv stations that all have hockey feeds.  I suppose I’ll separate minors and college when there are enough sources for each.
National News - Your major national news sources here.  There’s some repitition in there, but it makes missing something hard.  There’s also video feeds from Fox Sports and ESPN.  I’ll try and highlight those a little more, perhaps include the screenshots the feeds usually have.

Again, if you don’t want your feed here, please contact me.

If your feed isn’t here and you’d like it included just contact me about that too.  The minimum requirement for a blog: three months of continuous posting.  If you’d like to send me feeds I missed for the other sections, that’s cool too.

This will be added to hockeyfights.com soon too, sending a little more traffic everyone’s way.
