Hockey, the Un-Bling
Sports Illustrated takes a look at America’s 50 richest athletes. To round it out some, they also have the international top 20. They even break out the crystal ball and give you a top 10 for the future.
If you’re wondering where any hockey/NHL players are, I’ll clue you in: no where. Not one player is on any list. Keith Tkachuk was the highest paid American, and he certainly wasn’t swimming in endorsements last season. Still, the international list sees no Jagr, no Iginla. The futures list doesn’t offer a whiff of Sidney Crosby. Alex Ovechkin might have skated off with the Rookie of the Year award, but Crosby’s still got the easy marketing edge - but not enough to make SI think he could be a top earner.
Is it a sign the NHL has their money under control? That the players are unmarketable (by way of being surpressed by the league, or their own personalities)? Or simply that the NHL is dead in the water compared to other sports and their stars?
Thanks to Deadspin for the pointer.
