High Scoring Still Not Important

Jes is loving the “new” NHL:

The New NHL: I’m loving it. I love the fact that there are crazy 7-6 games. I love the fact the teams can make ACTUAL 3rd period comebacks! Really, it was getting ridiculous how every NHL game seemed to be decided after 2 periods. I am loving the flow and I don’t mind if there are a few ‘soft’ penalties to make it happen.

Flow?  I’ve seen maybe 3 games with flow so far (and I’ve watched too many games already).  I’m not saying the “new” NHL won’t work eventually, but some of these games are downright brutal right now.  I’m patient, but the flow to most of these games is awful at best.

I also realize that I still don’t care how high these scores get.  Carolina beating Pittsburgh 3-2 (decided in shootout) was far more exciting than the high scoring games of that day.  That game was probably the only time I really enjoyed the shootout too, as it was fun watching Cam Ward stop Mario Lemieux, Ziggy Palffy and Sidney Crosby in his first game.  Exciting and entertaining is what it’s all about.  I realize goals make people get up and shout, but being on the edge of your seat for most of a game, watching back and forth rushes is a lot more fun than watching back and forth power plays.

Don’t take this as a complaint though, I’m being patient, I just haven’t seen what I’m looking for yet (or more accurately, enough).

Update 8pm: Shawn P. Roarke agrees with me about the flow of the game and has some un-fun stats to back it up.
