Gretzky’s Optimistic

Syd Vanderpool, a Canadian boxer is fighting for the vacant IBF super middleweight title tonight against Jeff Lacy (on Showtime).

Vanderpool called Wayne Gretzky and asked him if his daughter (who’s 15) would sing the national anthem after Vanderpool saw her sing at the World Cup of Hockey;  and Gretzky said sure.

In between rounds Jim Gray spoke to Gretzky about that, how he likes to come to Vegas for some boxing and then finished up with a lockout question.  Gray asked Gretzky if he thought there would be season, and of course, the Great One said he thinks the two sides will work something out and there will be.

Not that you expected anything else, or that Gretzky would say differently even if he believed that way.

Update: after a good start, and maybe winning the first three of five rounds, Vanderpool took heavy punishment from the sixth round on and the ref stopped the fight in the eighth round.
