Good Officiating
You may not think the NHL has a good officiating crew, but enough people taking ESPN’s current SportsNation poll do. After controversial calls from last night’s Super Bowl, a 10-question poll went up today asking for opinions on the calls and the NFL’s officiating. I present question #10:
10) Which major sport has the best officials?
44.5% MLB
22.6% NHL
20.7% NBA
12.2% NFL
This is after 70,488 votes.
Some things to consider:
- The 1.9% lead the NHL has on the NBA translates to about 1339 votes.
- Many are still angry over yesterday’s calls. The NFL would probably fair better over the summer, and I’d assume a recent controversial call in baseball would drop the MLB some.
- The NHL generally ranks low on the raw popularity charts. I can’t decide if this is a good number of hockey fans voting - or if non-hockey fans simply think the NHL has good referees.

I’d say this was ignorance talking and people still pissed from the Super Bowl officiating… If all these people were hockey fans and new some of the ridiculousness that goes on nightly on ice…
The NBA is generally thought of as the worst when I talk to people—but the NHL is usually an argument for worst or second worst…
