Fighting Tidbit

Tonight’s Blues-Stars game had four fights in the first period.  That’s the first time a game had four fights (and eight fighting major penalties) in one period this season.

The last time it happened in the NHL?  March 8, 2004 - Avalanche-Canucks, a game which included the infamous Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore incident.  However, the incident took place in the third period, and the four fights were in the first period, including Moore’s first (and only) NHL fight against Matt Cooke.  The Harvard alum held his own in that bout.

Only three days before that game was the Philadelphia-Ottawa game that had enough brawling to set a new penalty minute record.  However, that game was well received in Philadelphia (surprised?) and Ottawa and didn’t send a negative shockwave through the media (no need to even put “hockey” or “sport” before the word media, as all covered it).

Update: Video clips of tonight’s Blues-Stars game are currently on up hockeyfights.com.  Recaps available on the fightlog.
