Fighting Majors

Fighting majors are 5-minute penalties given to players when they fight during an ice hockey game.

For the most part two players fight and two penalties are awarded.  Two penalties.  One fight.

The CP either doesn’t get it or doesn’t care:

While the new NHL hasn’t been kind to the slow and unskilled goons, fights numbered 147 in the first 166 games this season - up from 129 last season - .

There have been 147 fighting majors this season, not fights.  There have been 74 fights this season (one time one player was given a major when the other wasn’t).

Whether or not you approve of fighting and hockey, it’s a misrepresentation of the game.

Thanks to Kukla’s for the pointer to the article.

  1. Or it’s typo. But to bloggers the MSM always has an agenda, doesn’t it?

  2. It’s not a typo.  It’s a mistake made repeatedly throughout the piece and even listed like this in a stats area:
    Fights: 147 (0.9 per game)

Fights per game is actually half of that.

I didn’t suggest it has anything to do with an agenda.  It’s a mistake and one that will be republished over and over due to it being in a CP article, and that’s a shame and why it should be pointed out.

  3. To add: I’m not a MSM hater, or “they have an agenda” kinda guy or anything like that (too many contacts and friends who I respect over there); but there are things that should be pointed out, and if anyone’s going to do it for a fight stat error, it might as well be me.
