Carnival in Action

James Mirtle put together the latest incarnation of the Carnival of the NHL. Unfortunately I haven’t put together many big hockey posts lately, so I skipped this round.

I will throw my late prediction for the top three finishing teams at the end of the NHL’s regular season out here though:
1. Philadelphia
2. Calgary
3. Florida (ooooh says the crowd)

I think you might be right on the ball there with the Florida pick. With all of the hoopla surrounding teams like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh who made the biggest splashes in the offseason, few have realized that the Panthers just might be the most improved team since 2003-04. The Panthers were almost a .500 when they ended the season. It will benefit them to have another year under their belt, this offseason had the majority of the team playing in other leagues. The Panthers dropped the first bomb in the free agent frenzy, quickly snapping up Roberts and Nieuwendyk, two veteran forwards who can give some locker room leadership to an otherwise young team. They also snapped up veteran scorers Gratton and Stumpel, resigned some of their young guns in Hagman, Weiss, and Huselius, and brought Martin Gelinas, a key player in Calgary's run to the finals, on board. All Florida has to do is resign restricted free agents, Bouwmeester and Luongo, and they are pretty much set for next season. It will be very interesting to see how the Panthers perform this season.
