An Intermission Clock

No matter what hockey broadcast I’m watching, I’m wondering why none of them have an intermission clock. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just a simple countdown in a corner, and maybe even lightly watermark it over commercials. Think of all those times you flipped around and went back to flipping when you saw a commercial on, when you might have left the channel on if you saw the clock under 1:00.

I know networks are thinking of ways to make hockey broadcasts better, but sometimes it’s the little things that go a long way. Hopefully we’ll see this soon.

The Bruins (NESN) do have a clock during the pre-game show and intermissions that show how much time is left before hockey begins. I always get my refills with about 5 minutes before the next period starts. The clock isn't shown during commercials.

You're either interested in the intermission features or you're not. We all know how much time there is when intermission starts, so a clock coming up isn't going to shock anyone to suddenly start flipping around. For the people who do already, the timer could help bring them back in easier. If they want to strap people in they just have to offer up great content in between periods (and I'm not saying that's easy to do); but the effect a timer would have on the audience would most likely be positive. They'd actually watch the last couple of commercials if they saw a low clock instead of continuing to flip around.

That's where they get their money. Why would an advertiser pay to advertise during a time when the network is doing all it can to allow viewers to skip watching the commercials? As the first commenter stated, they'd rather find a way to strap you to your seat than provide ways for you to not watch the commercials. I don't think any broadcaster will ever do this. I recommend you get yourself a kitchen timer and keep time yourself. :-)
